How to be yourself
To be yourself is to know yourself.
Know your past, your present, and who you want to be.
…
Know your past
To learn from your mistakes. Do not think of the past experience of punishing yourself that you were not good or you were bad. You are not a bad person. It is only that you made the mistake and everyone did as well.
Once you spot your mistake that is the way of noble mind does. Because awareness is the first step to the new change, the better version of you.
Once you have awareness of your action. You learn its consequences. Then decide to do better. Select a better choice.
To be yourself does not mean you have to be the same person all your life. Be the same is one form of no improvement. No one was born to be perfect. We made mistake. Accept you made one, learn, and do better to be better. Hence be yourself means do what you think best for you and your life from the resources that you have at that moment, including the changes.

Do what you feel regret not doing in the past. Maybe that could be the next thing you want to get your hands on right now.
…
Know your present
Know what consequences will be from your actions you are doing now.
Consider them well. Be aware of all the decisions you are making. Disregard other’s opinions because they are not walking in your shoes. You know your position best.
Therefore, whenever you have to decide, observes choices objectively. Ask deep questions about it. When you have made the decision. Be certain about it. Do what you need to do. Then watch the result.
If it turns good then continue doing that. If not then change along the way.
Be confident.
Remember everyone makes mistakes.
You are to make many mistakes and learn from them.
…
Know who you want to be
That phrase is: know your future.
You learn how to learn about your past, your present.
Now know your future is that you know who do you want to be.
What kind of people do you want to be.
I know that we all have seen and learn a lot from people around us.
Not all of them are our idols.
But at least there are some traits in those people that you admire.
Pick those traits that you want to develop.
Then see from where you are now. (Actually, your inner might have the seed of that trait already. That’s why you spot that trait in others.) Let’s think about one situation that a person (your idol) might face and try to think how they would react to that situation. And see if it were you, how would you react.
How would they think about it vs. how would you think about it?
How would they say/respond to that situ vs. how would you say?
If you want to develop some traits like them. See how they responded to situations and imitate how they think, speak, and do.
It’s not a copy & paste. Human is not that easy made by copy & paste. We are individuals even identical twins have different personalities, thoughts, and opinions.
You can still have different opinions from your picked-future-you (your idol). But it does not mean you have to think the same as he/she thinks.
But the way to proceed and perceive things. You can imitate them. (Remember everyone makes mistakes. But it’s always good to have a broad view to analyze the situation rather than one.) The idea to imitate your idol is: to open your eyes to see the situation from different views. Start to see from their view comparing to your view and other’s view. See what serves you (and others) best. And make a decision from that. This way you will develop the good trait that you pick and be yourself completely.
